TCM Emotions and Their Organ Connections

Victoria Healing Space

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), health is viewed as a dynamic balance of body, mind, and spirit. One of the most fascinating aspects of TCM is the connection between emotions and organ systems. According to this wisdom, emotions are not just fleeting feelings — they influence physical health.

There are seven key emotions in TCM. Five are closely tied to specific organs and elements, forming a continuous “circle” of balance. In harmony, these emotions are healthy and beneficial. But when excessive or unbalanced, they can disrupt organ function and overall wellness. Two additional emotions are considered inherently negative when prolonged or extreme.

Let’s explore the emotions and their organ connections:

1. Heart — Fire Element

  • Emotion: Joy

  • Balanced: Brings contentment, laughter, and the ability to enjoy life.

  • Excessive: Leads to mania, over-excitement, and restlessness.

  • Notes: Healthy joy nourishes the heart, but too much can cause insomnia, agitation, or emotional instability.

2. Spleen — Earth Element

  • Emotion: Worry / Overthinking

  • Balanced: Encourages careful reflection and problem-solving.

  • Excessive: Turns into chronic worry or obsessive thoughts.

  • Notes: Overthinking weakens the spleen, affecting digestion, energy, and immunity.

3. Lungs — Metal Element

  • Emotion: Grief / Sadness

  • Balanced: Healthy grieving allows us to process and release emotions.

  • Excessive: Prolonged grief can lead to depression and difficulty letting go.

  • Notes: Unresolved sadness impacts lung function, skin health, and overall vitality.

4. Kidneys — Water Element

  • Emotion: Fear

  • Balanced: Protective fear helps preserve life and avoid danger.

  • Excessive: Chronic fear or anxiety can weaken resilience and create phobias.

  • Notes: Long-term fear depletes kidney energy, affecting memory, stamina, and the lower back.

5. Liver — Wood Element

  • Emotion: Anger

  • Balanced: Anger motivates positive change and helps end harmful situations.

  • Excessive: Prolonged anger turns into resentment, irritability, or frustration.

  • Notes: Unbalanced anger can cause liver stagnation, headaches, digestive problems, and menstrual irregularities.

Two Always Negative Emotions

Beyond the circle of five, shock and extreme forms of fear or grief are considered always harmful. They disrupt the natural flow of Qi (energy) and should be addressed with care and support.
