San Fu Tie Respiratory & Immune Support in Victoria, BC

Preparing for the Damp Winter Months: My Personal Journey with San Fu Tie

If you are someone who seems to catch every cold that goes around the moment our Victoria autumn turns damp and chilly, I want you to know you aren’t alone.

For a long time, I was that patient. I dreaded the transition from summer to winter because it inevitably meant fighting off a lingering cough, sinus congestion, or endless cycles of bronchitis. It felt like my immune system was constantly playing catch-up, and by the time January arrived, my body felt completely depleted by the persistent wet cold.

Then, I discovered a seasonal practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine called San Fu Tie. It completely changed how my body handled the colder months, and it is a preventative treatment I am incredibly grateful to share with our community at Victoria Healing Space today.

What is San Fu Tie?

San Fu Tie is a gentle, time-tested herbal patch therapy designed to boost your body’s defensive energy, known in Chinese medicine as Wei Qi.

Instead of taking internal herbs or receiving acupuncture needles, a small paste made of warming, aromatic raw herbs is applied directly to specific acupuncture points on your upper back, legs, arms, etc. It depends on the patient. These herbs are chosen for their ability to penetrate deep into the meridians, stimulating the immune system and clearing out deep-seated cold flags from the lungs.

The unique part of this therapy is its timing: it is practiced strictly during the hottest days of the summer.

The Logic of "Winter Illness, Summer Treatment"

In Chinese medicine, catching frequent colds or struggling with winter asthma often indicates a lack of internal warmth and protective energy. When the winter air is damp and cold, your body has to work twice as hard just to keep its core systems warm, leaving very little energy to fight off viruses.

Think of your body’s immune system like a home’s heating system. Trying to fix a broken furnace in the middle of a freezing January is difficult, uncomfortable, and inefficient. Traditional Chinese Medicine teaches us that the best time to rebuild and upgrade your internal “furnace” is during July and August, when nature’s heat is at its peak.

By applying these deeply warming herbal patches during the hottest weeks of the year, the pores are open, the Qi is flowing near the surface, and we help your body absorb that seasonal warmth. This builds a natural shield that protects your lungs long before the damp Victoria winter weather even arrives.

A Brief History: Centuries of Seasonal Wisdom

While this therapy might feel new to us in the Pacific Northwest, it carries a rich history spanning hundreds of years.

The concept originated from ancient medical texts, but the specific formulation and protocol of the San Fu herbal patch were formally recorded during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912 CE) in the classic medical text Zhang Shi Yi Tong, compiled by the renowned physician Zhang Lu in 1695.

Physicians recognized that people suffering from chronic respiratory conditions often felt wonderful in the summer but deteriorated rapidly in the winter. Rather than waiting for the winter crisis to hit, they realized they could utilize the peak heat of summer to permanently root out chronic, cold-induced ailments. For generations, entire communities have gathered at the turn of the solar calendar to receive these applications.

What Modern Research Says

While the vocabulary of Traditional Chinese Medicine speaks of “warming the meridians” and “boosting Yang Qi,” modern clinical research explains its benefits through the lens of immunology:

Immune System Modulation: Clinical trials show that the specific herbs used in San Fu Tie (such as Bai Jie Zi / Mustard Seed and Xi Xin / Asarum) stimulate the skin to activate a local immune response. This helps regulate immunoglobulin levels (like IgE and IgG), effectively reducing allergic hypersensitivity in the airways. Source: Chen et al. Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2015.

A benchmark 2015 PubMed Review evaluating 1,785 patients across 18 clinical studies showed highly favorable outcomes for respiratory challenges like allergic rhinitis and asthma, noting high patient acceptance and minimal side effects.

Significant Effectiveness: A formal 2015 Meta-Analysis tracking 657 patients demonstrated that San Fu patch applications were up to 3.5 times more effective than control groups in actively supporting long-term respiratory health and reducing airway hyper-reactivity. Source: Tian Jiu Meta-Analysis.

Clinical Observation: Expert literature, such as research by Lorraine Wilcox, PhD (2016), notes up to an 85% favorable response rate for chronic airway issues when the specialized patches are applied strictly on the correct calendar dates.

Reducing Chronic Inflammation: Studies indicate that the therapy helps down-regulate inflammatory cytokines. For people with asthma or chronic bronchitis, this means the respiratory tract becomes significantly less reactive to triggers like dampness and sudden temperature drops.

Note: Researchers note that more large-scale studies are still needed. Individual results vary. This information is for educational purposes only.

The Summer 2026 Schedule

Because this protocol aligns with the traditional solar calendar to ensure the herbs are at their most effective, treatments are offered in a series of three sessions spaced across the summer:

  1. FIRST FU: July 14, 2026

  2. MIDDLE FU: July 24, 2026

  3. LAST FU: August 13, 2026

The application itself is non-invasive, and can be entirely needle-free, and takes just 30-60 minutes in the clinic. We apply the small herbal patches to your back, secured with medical tape, and you leave them on for  2 to 4 hours as you go about your day. During this time, you will experience a pleasant, gentle sensation of localized warmth as the herbs do their work.

  • Chronic winter coughs, clearing of the throat, or bronchitis

  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and persistent sinus issues

  • Asthma or respiratory tightness that feels noticeably worse in cold, damp air

How the Session Works

Every single session follows a dedicated clinical sequence to prioritize safety and bio-individual care:

  1. COMPLETE INTAKE FORM: A full review of all medications, supplements, allergies, and skin sensitivities is required before every single application. Not everyone is a suitable candidate.

  2. TONGUE & PULSE ASSESSMENT: This reveals the immediate internal state of your organ systems and vital energy—vital insights that do don’t always show up on standard blood tests.

  3. CONSTITUTION CHECK: We analyze your body’s specific tendencies toward cold, heat, dampness, or dryness to determine the right clinical approach. Each patch is placed on specific points on the back, chest, or neck chosen individually for your pattern—not everyone receives patches in the same location.

  4. PATCH APPLICATION: Your handcrafted patches are applied directly to your selected points. You may feel a mild, pleasant warmth or tingling—this is completely normal.

  5. REMOVE AT HOME: Patches stay on your skin for 4 to 6 hours and are simply peeled off at home. Mild, localized redness and skin warmth is perfectly normal.

  6. REPEAT × 3: You must attend all three scheduled San Fu dates (July 14, July 24, and August 13) to achieve the full cumulative effect.

FAQ

Is San Fu Tie right for me?

San Fu Tie is traditionally used as a preventative, seasonal layer of care. It may be highly suitable for you if you or your loved ones fit any of the following descriptions:

  • Adults and Children (Ages 3+): Perfect for younger family members or adults who struggle with low respiratory resilience.

  • Frequent Winter Ailments: If you are prone to catching every seasonal cold, flu, or persistent chest bug that goes around.

  • Chronic Respiratory Concerns: Individuals managing asthma, wheezing, chronic bronchitis, or seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever).

  • A “Cold” Constitution: If you feel like you are always chilly, suffer from cold hands and feet, or feel chronically depleted and tired once winter arrives.

  • Dedicated to Prevention: Those who prefer proactive, seasonal wellness care to strengthen the body before illness strikes.

  • Returning Participants: If you have done the patches in previous summers and want to continue building your compounding three-year defense cycle.

Who should avoid San Fu Tie?

Because the raw herbs used in these handmade patches are intensely warming, moving, and potent, this therapy is not suitable for individuals experiencing any of the following conditions:

  • Pregnancy

  • An active fever or an acute infection

  • Open skin rashes, broken skin, or active eczema flare-ups at the back patch sites

  • Severe or chronic heart conditions

  • Known severe allergies to botanical herbs

  • A recent stroke

  • Any unstable, acute medical health conditions

What should I do if I am unsure about my suitability?

If you have questions about whether your specific health pattern aligns with this protocol, please reach out to the clinic directly. We prioritize individual care and will thoroughly review your health picture during your initial assessment to ensure your safety and comfort.

Is San Fu Tie therapy safe for children?

Yes, for children aged 3 and older. San Fu Tie is highly valued in pediatric care because it is entirely needle-free and non-invasive.

However, children have much more sensitive skin than adults. Because our patches are freshly made with raw herbs and fresh ginger juice, children wear the patches for a significantly shorter time (usually 1 to 2 hours maximum) compared to adults. I monitor pediatric applications very closely to protect their delicate skin.

How many sessions do I need?

To get the full preventative benefit, you need a series of 3 sessions spaced across the summer.

San Fu Tie works as a cumulative, compounding therapy rather than a single standalone treatment. Each application builds upon the last to deeply anchor warming energy into your body before winter arrives.

When you book your protocol, you are committing to all three specific calendar dates:

  1. FIRST FU: July 14, 2026

  2. MIDDLE FU: July 24, 2026

  3. LAST FU: August 13, 2026

What should I expect on my skin after removal?

Because the formulation is designed to stimulate a localized immune response through the skin, mild redness, a warm sensation, and slight tingling are completely normal and expected. In some cases, a small blister may form at the patch site. In traditional practice, this minor irritation is actually seen as a sign that the body’s immune response has been successfully activated. However, we prioritize your comfort—if you feel any severe burning or sharp discomfort at any point, you are instructed to peel the patches off immediately.

How do I prepare for my first acupuncture visit?

Eat a light meal beforehand — not on an empty stomach. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Bring a list of any medications or supplements you are taking. Plan to rest afterward if possible. Your first visit includes a full health history assessment, so allow extra time. Read more “First Visit What to Expect”.
